●指輪物語(Lord of the Rings)

これについては立派なサイトがそれこそ星の数ほどあるだろうに、何を今更・・・という感もないではないが。。。おいおい書き足していく予定。なお、固有名詞類は原則として原語表記。

Elves

'These are High Elves! They spoke the name of Elbereth!'
Bag Endから出立したFrodo達がBlack Riderから隠れるシーン。映画ではHobbit達が自力で切り抜けるが、原作ではElberethを讃える歌を歌いながらやってくるHigh Elvesに気づいてBlack Riderが逃げて行く。
High Elves are Light Elves.
Elfの種族にもいくつかあるが、Middle-Earthに生まれ出た彼らの中で、神々の呼びかけに応えて西の地、Amanに渡り、輝く２本の木、TelperionとLaurelinの光を見た者たちとその子孫をHigh Elves(Elves of the Light)、神々を畏れ、Middle-Earthに止まった者たちをElves of the Darknessと総称する。 High-elven speechとは、High Elvesが使っていた言葉（Quenya）で、Middle-Earthにおいては最早日常的には話されぬ古語（Elf-latin）となっている。
これらの中間、Amanに渡る前に訳あってMiddle-Earthに止まったSindar族はGrey-elvesと呼ばれ、彼らの言葉SindarinがQuenyaに代わってMiddle-EarthのElfの間で話されている。ElberethはSindarinで'Star-Queen'の意。最も力ある女神にして、神々の長Manwëの妻Vardaの事である。

さて、High Elvesには３つの種族が含まれる。Vanyar族，Nordor族，そしてTeleri族の一部（残りはSindar族とDark Elves）である。Vanyar族はElfの中でも最初に現れた美しく高貴な種族で、彼らはAmanに渡って、二度とMiddle-earthには戻らなかった。
Nordor族はMiddle-earthに戻った種族である。AmanにおけるNordorの長がFinwëで、彼の長子がFëanorである。Fëanorの母は彼を産んで死に、FinwëはVanyar族の長の血縁にあたる女性を妻に迎え、FingolfinとFinarfinの二子を儲ける。FinarfinがTeleri族の女性と結婚して生まれた子供の一人がGaradrielであり（従ってGaradrielはHigh Elvesの３種族全ての血を引いていることになる）、Fingolfinの血統からは、原作でSamが風見が丘で歌ったElfの王Gil-galad（映画第１部冒頭のLast Allianceで倒れる）が出ている。Fingolfinのひ孫が航海者Eärendilで、彼の子供たちがHalf-ElfのElrondとElrosの兄弟である。Elrosは人間として限りある命を生きる事を選び取り、ここからElendil王家の血脈が続くことになる。Last AllianceでSauronの指から指輪を切り取り、結局自分も指輪のために命を落とすIsildurもこの血筋であり、Aragornはこの王家の末裔である。Garadrielの娘とElrondとの間に生まれたのがArwen姫であるからして・・・遠大な姻戚関係ではある。

映画版で結構な人気になったLegolasはDark Elf（Wood Elfとも）の王子様。しかし第１巻では彼が'Elbereth Gilthoniel!'と嘆息するシーンもあり、Elberethの御名はHigh Elvesの専売特許でもないようで。。。はて？
They differed from the High Elves of the West, and were more dangerous and less wise. For most of them were descended from the anciend tribes that never went to Faerie in the West. There the Light-elves and the Deep-elves and the Sea-elves went and lived for ages...
"The Hobbit"より、Wood Elvesと比較してHigh Elvesの３種族を一言づつで表現した一文。VanyarがLight-elves、NordorがDeep-elves、そして、海沿いに住み、造船を良くするTeleriがSea-elvesである。西の地をFaerie（これは短編'Smith of Wootton Major'にもElfの国として出てくる）と表記しているのは多分この時点でまだイメージが固まっていなかったためと思われる。実際、３種族の名前についてもずいぶんと考えたようで、草案の段階ではNordorはGnomeとなっていた。ＲＰＧの影響でノームというと魔法が使えるヒゲの小人というイメージが出来上がっているので、そういう意味ではNordorがノームだなんて！とショックを受ける人もいるかも知れない。しかし、人間の時代になり、西の地に渡り損ねたElfたちの末裔と考えればあながち外れでもないだろう。Garadrielもこう言っている。
'We must depart into the West, or dwindle to a rustic folk of dell and cave, slowly to forget and to be forgotten.'

Tom Bombadil & Lady Goldberry

'Laugh and be merry! I am Goldberry, daughter of the River.' Then lightly she passed them and closing the door she turned her back to it, with her white arms spread out across it, 'Let us shut out the night!' she said. 'For you are still afraid, perhaps, of mist and tree-shadows and deep water, and untame things. Fear nothing! For tonight you are under the roof of Tom Bombadil.'
  The hobbits looked at her in wonder; and she looked at each of them and smiled. 'Fair Lady Goldberry!' said Frodo at last, feeling his heart moved with a joy that he enchanted by fair elven-voices;
映画ではThe Old Forest〜In The House of Tom Bombadil〜Fog on the Barrow-downsがばっさり刈り込まれて、Black Ridersから逃れたHobbitたちは一足飛びにBreeに。。。Goldberryさまに会いたかった・・・

映画の主題

原作を離れたいくつかのシーンからも明らかなように'temptation'が中心に据えられている。映画では、指輪の誘惑的な光もさることながら、”喋る”ことでより能動的なtempterとしての役割を演じて見せている。
映画第１部ラスト近く、Aragornへのtemptationも強烈なシーンである。原作ではLórienを離れる際にGaradrielからAragornに、エメラルド（Elfが好むのでElfstoneと呼ばれる）のブローチと共に王としての名前が与えられる。
Then she lifted from her lap a great stone of a clear green, set in a silver brooch that was wrought in the likeness of an eagle with outspread wings;...
'This stone I gave to Celebrían my daughter, and she to hers; and now it comes to you as a token of hope. In this hour take the name that was foretold for you, Elessar, the Elfstone of the house of Elendil!'
映画の中で指輪は'Aragorn, Elessar'と囁く。'Elessar'は本来、彼が敵を打ち破り、王家の版図を取り戻して初めて公然と名乗る事のできる名前である。指輪を手にしさえすれば彼は一気に強大な王国の支配者になれる、ただ１つの名前だけでそれだけの誘惑を仕掛けてみせる、鳥肌の立つシーンではありました。

    指輪物語とは直接関係ない短編２編。前者は指輪の主題にも通じるところのある少しまじめな物語。後者は文句なし！の皮肉の効いた大笑い中世風竜退治譚（こちらは英語もさほど難しくないので軽く読むのにおすすめ。笑えます）。
    • 映画第２部公開直前一夜漬け粗筋：１部は見たけれども原作は読んでなくて、今回の映画はかなり頭がごちゃごちゃになりそうだから予習しておきたい、という方向け。
